Art Deco Guide

The Art Deco era was a hugely influential period of innovation in all aspects of design, spanning the late 19th century to the pre-war years. The movement itself really took off in 1925 alongside the World Fair.

Elegant yet practical designs replaced the natural imagery found in art nouveau design. Designers and jewellery makers of this time drew on inspiration from exotic places including ancient Egypt and Persia.

Art Deco Sapphire Diamond Cluster Ring

This beautiful ring shows the period's classic integration of geometric patterns and symmetry. The strikingly contrasting colours are typical of this time period. The larger diamonds in the centre create an exciting focal point.

Art Deco Diamond Bracelet Platinum

The platinum design work on this bracelet illustrates the Art Deco period's characteristic use of repeated intricate pattern. The sleeveless cuts of the iconic flapper dresses also lead to greater embellishment of the arms with bracelets.

The workmanship is exquisite with fabulous, open-work links decorated with milgrain detailing. It’s held securely around the wrist by a concealed locking clasp.

Art Deco Double Pearl Necklace Ruby Diamond

The rise of the jewellery we know as Art Deco today took inspiration from the riotously different fashion from the previous century.

Long necklaces grew in popularity helping to create a long sleek silhouette which was complemented by the drop waist of the flapper dress. Beading and pearls on necklaces accentuated the movements of women, including when dancing the famous Charleston. This highlighted the freedom felt by women no longer constrained within the corsetry of the Edwardian period.

Antique Art Deco Diamond Drop Earrings

The departure from long flowing locks to ultra short hairstyles, lead to the creation of the long, dangly earrings we see during this period.
These diamond earrings are great examples of the geometric designs typical of the period. Their articulated hinge allows them to move freely and be shown off in their full extravagance.
